Warringah residents and visitors
expect a clean, healthy environment. Our beaches and open spaces are
what make Warringah special. A trip to the beach,
going for a walk, having something to eat or taking the children to
sport is about getting fresh air and living life to the full.
To maintain our
clean and healthy environment, Warringah Council is making its beaches
and some public spaces such as children’s playgrounds and outdoor
sporting areas smoke-free. This means a healthier environment for
everyone.
Smoke free
space: better for everyone
Smoking – even
so-called ‘passive smoking’ – is proven to cause significant health
problems. For children, exposure to tobacco smoke increases the
likelihood of SIDS, asthma and ear and chest infections. For adults,
exposure to cigarette smoke increases the chances of developing heart
disease and lung cancer.
Cigarette butts
pose a major litter issue on our beaches and public areas. They take
decades to break down, badly affect marine animals and birds and are
very difficult to clean from our beaches.
Warringah’s
environment is priceless - let’s keep it that way by keeping cigarette
butts away.
